Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge
Nestled into the foothills of the Sibun National Forest Reserve in Central Belize, Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge is surrounded by over a hundred thousand acres of untouched wilderness. It is an ideal retreat for nature lovers wishing to experience the sounds and sights of a tropical rainforest in a tranquil, undisturbed atmosphere.
Owner Dave Hayles writes:
We originally purchased the lodge property back in 1991 as a site for our country home. After years of searching, we found the perfect location on a gently sloping terrace along the Sibun River basin and surround by the Maya Mountains. Prominently overlooking the site is the majestic Sleeping Giant Mountain from where the lodge gets its name.
In spite of all of the impressive surrounding vistas, the property’s defining feature is a spring fed creek running through it. Margarita Creek, named after the family matriarch, serves as the lodge’s natural focal point. For years we have returned to Margarita creek to relax after a long day’s work. For us it is truly a magical place and we invite you to come and share it with us and enjoy the same wonderful sense of tranquility.
Built along Margarita Creek, the lodge building’s rustic origins are clearly visible in the log beams, wood floors and thatch roof, all this material was gathered or harvested from the property. The home later grew into a family compound when several out buildings were added to accommodate visiting friends and family. In 2004 the process of converting the family gathering place into a lodge began and since that time the property has seen the careful addition of modern amenities without sacrificing its rustic appeal.
You will enjoy the terrific vantage point from our second floor Creek Side lounge, where you can relax with an early morning coffee or a late afternoon drink while listening to the sounds of the creek and watching the birds come alive. Dining is on the third floor where you will enjoy our home cooked meals. Belize is a fascinating melting pot of people and that is reflected in our menu, a delicious blend of Belizean, Central and North American cuisine.
Sleeping Giant offers a rural landscape surrounded by river, creeks and jungle. With only 9 guest rooms Sleeping Giant is an intimate bed and breakfast size resort. We pride ourselves in our low key relaxed atmosphere and will strive to make your stay with us a very pleasant respite from everyday life.
