Panama is best known for its famous canal, but there is so much more to discover in this unique country.  We definitely think it’s a great idea to experience the canal, but where you’re done, you’ll definitely want to explore some of the other highlights.

Panama City & Casco Viejo

When you fly into Panama, it’s a great idea to spend a couple of days in Panama City to see all of the attractions.  You can visit the canal, but don’t forget to check out the canal museum and have some lunch on the causeway!  We also recommend that you spend some time in Panama City’s old quarter – Casco Viejo.  This area is full of hip restaurants and bars and the architecture will make you feel like you’re walking through Panama 100 years ago.  Panama is growing, so be on the lookout soon for more action on the islands dotting the Pacific Coast.

Central Panama

Just outside of Panama City is a natural wonderland that is unlike any other in the world.  Tours on Lake Gatun will take you in search of monkeys as giant freighters pass by your small boat, making you feel the size of an ant.  This lake area is home to Panama’s Imbera indigenous people.  Visitors can take a boat to the indigenous village and visit with its friendly inhabitants.  Just a little farther away from town and you’re at the Pacific Coast.  Enjoy the white sandy beaches and beautiful vegetation in this area.

Boquete

In the Northern part of Panama, you can experience an eternal spring.  The Boquete region keeps perfect, spring-like temperatures year-round.  This area is great for birding, horseback riding and canopy tours.  This area is very similar to Costa Rica’s cloud forest.

Bocas del Toro

This funky Caribbean town is one of the greatest things Panama has to offer.  Cabinas rest on stilts on top of the crystal clear blue waters as fish and other marine life meander underneath.  The town is full of restaurants and bars with lots of personality and a laid-back vibe.  There are several small islands in the area that offer pristine beaches and fabulous accommodations.
