Custom, Small Group, People-to-People Program
5 nights / 6 days
Travel on an adventure from the faded elegance of Cuba’s capital city to the rural heartland of this island nation. We will introduce you to the people and the places that have shaped today’s Cuba and take you on an exploration of back roads to the lesser visited parts of the island. There will be many opportunities to engage in authentic cultural exchanges with your hosts and by meeting fascinating locals one-on-one.
Havana – NOVEMBER 6-9 (3 nights)
Spend three nights exploring the magic of Old Havana and her treasures: the plazas, churches, bodegas and nightlife. Experience the restored majesty of Old Havana and her maze of colonial history. Travel with a marine biologist to visit the northern coast beaches just outside of the capital. Then you will hop in the water with masks and snorkels to see up close how local organic farming practices have helped preserve Cuba’s coral reefs.
Walking tours and visits to private art galleries will enable you to take a closer look at the architectural heritage that earned Old Havana’s UNESCO World Heritage listing. Explore organic urban agro-markets and dine at unique private Cuban restaurants known as “Paladares”. Take private kitchen tours and meet the people behind Cuba’s entrepreneurial renaissance.
At sunset you will cross the legendary Bahia de La Habana and visit Cuba’s patron saint of safe passage, The “Virgin of Regla” and ask her for protection on your island journey. Cubans love showing off their culture and will invite you inside to experience ancient traditions from African roots up close with drums and dancing. This is a uniquely Cuban experience and makes an unforgettable memory.
By night, you will experience live music performances with up and coming Cuban music artists that represent the youth culture scene. Dance in the back alleys of old Havana with impromptu street musicians singing the classic music of Cuba’s nostalgic past!
Viñales – NOVEMBER 9-11 (2 nights)
The journey continues on day four to the tiny sugar growing hamlet of Artemisa as we drive across the Sierra del Rosario mountains to Valle de Viñales to experience the fall tobacco harvest.
You will visit organic farming cooperatives and eat a private “farm to table” paladar hidden away in the rugged mountains of a national biosphere reserve named UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biodiversity. Then ride on horseback through the national park to secluded farms and buy hand-rolled cigars directly from tobacco growers. Along the way you will meet the families that work the soil and have kept the legend of the Cuban cigars alive from one generation to the next.
