Day 2: Havana – private city tour in a vintage car

‘Bienvenido!’ to “La Habana”  Cuba’s capital.  Havana is a colorful, eclectic metropolis, surely one of the most intriguing cities in the world.  You will be exploring the city, its surroundings and – of course – meeting the people.

Today, you will step into the backseat of a vintage car, driven by a private chauffeur, and enjoy a full-day city tour, which includes:

  • Guided walk through historical ‘La Habana Vieja,’ founded in the 16th century, nowadays an incredible open air museum of architecture, art and culture. Stroll along the narrow colonial streets while vintage automobiles from the Fifties pass by;
  • Sightseeing in modern day Havana, covering all important landmarks.
  • Lunch in a ‘paladar,’ a private restaurant, a relatively new phenomena, allowing the Cubans private enterprise. Enjoy Cuban cuisine!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3: Vinales Valley

You will be driven to the Pinar del Río province, two hours west of Havana, touring the green area of the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site dotted with tobacco fields and surrounded by rugged mountains, called ‘mogotes.’

This is where the finest Cuban cigars are produced, and you will get a chance to sample them at a tobacco farm.  Chat with the locals, watch them play dominoes, and observe the peaceful daily life of rural Cuba.  Lunch will be at a ‘paladar’ within the valley, with breathtaking views all around you.  Overnight in the Viñales region.  Rustic charm at its best.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4: Las Terrazas

Return eastwards to Las Terrazas, one of Cuba’s prime ecotourism sites, only about 50 miles west from Havana.  The area is also known for the excellent coffee production, and you will have a taste of it at the charming hacienda Buenavista, dating from the 19th century.

Have lunch with a local farmer at his house, where a typical Cuban meal will be served: simple but delicious!

The peasant village of Las Terrazas was built in the seventies around the beautiful lake Lago San Juan and is now home of several artists. Have a look at their work!

Overnight in the Las Terrazas region.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5: Havana – the Hemingway way – private tour

Return to Havana, with a most pleasant detour dedicated to Hemingway nostalgia.  Celebrated American author Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba on and off for 20 years. His house, ‘Finca Vigia,’ is where he wrote some of his most famous novels, earning him the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The tour includes:

  • Visit to Finca Vigia where Hemingway wrote ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, among others. The interior has remained intact, as if Ernest just left the house for a break in between writing;
  • Visit to Cojimar, the sleepy seaside village that served as inspiration for his famous novel;
  • Visit to Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana where you may peek inside room 511, where Hemingway used to stay in the 1930s.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6: Cienfuegos – El Nicho – Trinidad: Private Jeep Tour

When leaving Havana, it seems as if you are driving back in time although you´re definitely riding forwards. The contrast between Cuba´s countryside and its cities (such as Havana) is not only striking, but also very interesting. The distance from Havana to Cienfuegos is approximately 243km (151miles).

Your first stop is the City of Cienfuegos.  Cienfuegos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a feast for the eye of an architect.  Founded by French emigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana in 1819, Cienfuegos is unique compared to other colonial Cuban cities that were founded by Spaniards.  The beating heart of the city is Parque José Martí flanked by government buildings, a cathedral, art gallery and the Teatro Tomás Terry.  Savor a cocktail at the eclectic Palacio del Valle (itself an architectural cocktail of gothic, Moorish and neoclassical styles).

After having lunch at Club Cienfuegos, the former yacht club that was founded in 1920, you will continue towards Trinidad.  The distance from Cienfuegos to Trinidad is about 95km (60miles) and is scheduled through the inner roads in order to get to El Nicho: a nature reserve with friendly waterfalls. ¨El Reino de las Aguas¨ is a gentle hiking trail of 2km (1.2mile), and whether or not to make the two-hour trek is completely up to you (optional).

After the drive you will arrive in Trinidad, tranquilly nestled between the feet of the Sierra Escambray mountain range and the azure-blue Caribbean Sea.

After having settled in a Casa Particular (homestay), enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7: Trinidad – Santa Clara – VARADERO

After a homemade breakfast on the patio, porch or in the kitchen of your Casa Particular you will head to the nearby Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills).  Trinidad owes its existence to the sugar industry flourishing from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. The Manaca Iznaga tower (1750), 44 meters high, was built next to a hacienda, those days to control the slaves.  Today, after climbing the stairs, it reveals a breathtaking panoramic view. Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios were declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

After this visit, you will return to the city of Trinidad, to have one last toast to the town at the bar La Canchánchara, which is housed in a mansion dating to 1723.  After lunch, you will take off for Santa Clara. Where Cienfuegos represents the late 19th/early 20th century, and Trinidad goes a few centuries back in history, Santa Clara is a modern university city that is inextricably linked to the late 1950´s and to the the triumph of the revolution. A visit to Che Guevara´s Memorial will demonstrate why.

After this visit, your driver will drop you off at the celebrated beaches of Varadero.  After check-in, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Crucero del Sol: Catamaran & Dolphins

Sail off-shore and discover – swimming or snorkeling – the beautiful, crystal-clear waters surrounding the Cuban peninsula.

You will sail to Cayo Blanco, where you’ll enjoy a delicious seafood lunch (lobster, shrimp, and fish).  An open bar is provided on board the comfortable vessels, as well as during your stay on the Cayo.

An approximately 15-minute interactive encounter with dolphins makes this an unforgettable excursion.

 Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9: VARADERO – Havana

Enjoy the morning and early afternoon at your leisure.  After lunch, a private transfer will bring you back to Havana.  Enjoy your last night in Cuba at your leisure.
